Austria’s first major museum retrospective of the extraordinary oeuvre created by Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) provides new insights into the artist’s unique visual language: The 1980s saw Basquiat transform the art world and cultural production at large with his highly symbolic, complex, and often emotionally charged works. Basquiat’s paintings and drawings take up political themes, criticizing racism, social injustice, and consumer capitalism in a spirit of opposition to established hierarchies and norms.
