This year’s FACING TIME line-up by VIENNA ART WEEK is all about time. Inspiring international guests from the fields of art, business and science will shed light on the topic from different perspectives, and a top-class panel discussion will focus on “20 editions of VIENNA ART WEEK, 20 years of Vienna as a city of art”. This will be followed by a short presentation of the anniversary publication and an aperitif.
3:30-4:00 „ETHICS AND POLITICS IN TIMES OF AI“
Democracy is under threat and AI risks to make things worse. We can do something about that, but we need global action. We also need to think through our relation to technology in the light of the polycrisis.
Mark Coeckelbergh (Professor of Philosophy of Media and Technology) in conversation with Christoph Thun-Hohenstein (Director General for International Cultural Relations at the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, Austria).
Short bio:
Mark Coeckelbergh is Professor of Philosophy of Media and Technology at the University of Vienna, ERA Chair at the Institute of Philosophy in Prague, and member of various national advisory councils in Austria and Belgium. He is the author of “AI Ethics”, “The Political Philosophy of AI” and “Why AI Undermines Democracy”.
Ambassador Christoph Thun-Hohenstein is Director General for International Cultural Relations at the Austrian Foreign Ministry. He was Director of the Austrian Cultural Forum New York from 1999 to 2007. From 2011 to 2021, Thun-Hohenstein was General Director of the MAK – Austrian Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna. He initiated the Vienna Biennale for Change, which he directed from 2014 until 2022. Most recently, he initiated the Vienna Climate Biennale, which took place for the first time in 2024.
