Special Musical Guest: Philipp Quehenberger
If you think of a space that contains living rituals, nothing may apply more than the kitchen. The kitchen is a place where meals are prepared and social gatherings held. People cook meals on a routine basis and these meals contain dishes that are made using a recipe, a recipe being a set of directions carried out in a series of actions that should be followed in sequence, aka a ritual. Historically, meetings to discuss literature or politics and even gatherings for a concert, have happened in the kitchen.
For the first episode of “Cooking with Cliff,” Scott Clifford Evans will show the viewer how to cook a staple of Mormon cuisine in which he was raised: “Funeral Potatoes.” This potato-and-cheese casserole may have a macabre nickname, but it earned this title because it is the quintessential Mormon comfort food. At a Mormon funeral, or wedding, or birthday party, or thanksgiving, Christmas, picnic…hell, pretty much any Mormon gathering, you’ll find that multiple attendees have brought this decadent dish, baked from their family’s recipe.
Evans will show you how to bake this cheesy heart-stopper. This episode will have special musical guest Philipp Quehenberger playing a live set of music he has composed for Evans’ collaborative film/installation project Murderkino. You could say that a concert by Quehenberger in Vienna is a ritual in itself. In this difficult time, who couldn’t use attending an online kitchen concert and maybe a little comfort food?
