On the occasion of the current exhibition ICONIC AUBÖCK, the MAK is hosting a panel discussion on the topic of collecting iconic design objects, offering an extraordinary opportunity to immerse oneself in the world of design and discover the potential of collecting. Design objects not only have a functional value, they also tell stories of creativity, innovation, cultural developments and networks.
With its iconic objects, the Carl Auböck workshop has been shaping Austrian design for over 100 years. The MAK is dedicating an extensive exhibition to the legendary manufactory, which still produces in Bernardgasse in Vienna’s seventh district and was often ahead of its time, focusing on works from the interwar and post-war period up to the 1980s, which paint a picture of living culture as a field of experimentation.
As part of the event, experts will discuss what makes a design object an icon, what influences shaped the Carl Auböck workshop across generations and what trends are emerging on the market for design objects.

The role of applied art in shaping our living spaces is the focus of the MAK, which operates at the interface of design, architecture and contemporary art in order to create new perspectives and explore borderline areas. The MAK aims to provide answers to the question of how design can help shape the world and expand possibilities for action and decision-making.
