“Las Manuelas” is a physical, emotional, moral and psychological interpretation of a real person named Manuela. In an attempt to represent her true character, the series creates an idealized figure full of Cueto’s desires, beliefs and political thoughts. The tension between reality and her idealization is represented with precise geometric elements in which the character interacts in unexpected situations.
The work is inscribed in the tradition of portraiture by Goya, Hermenegildo Bustos and Francis Picabia. For these painters, interpretation was more important than representation, which resulted in a psychological portrait of both the person portrayed and the artists themselves. The series is a reconstruction, a perception, a desire, a content and a deposited emotional charge.
Several drawings from this series are in public collections, such as the Wien Museum and the Kupferstichkabinett of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.
Essays by Marcello Farabegoli and Franz Rainer Thalmair address the aforementioned relationship between Las Manuelas and the tradition of portraiture, as well as the debt of artistic genealogy to which Cueto belongs.
